A turbo is effectively a sophisticated air pump that recycles wasted energy from exhaust gases to transform more of the fuel energy consumed into power. These gases drive a turbine wheel, which is coupled to a compressor. When rotating, these elements force air at increased pressure into the engine¡¯s combustion chamber. This compressed air is very hot, so a charge-air cooler reduces the temperaturC increasing the density. As a result, a larger amount of fuel can be used while maintaining the same air-fuel ratio, which enables more power to be generated from smaller displacement engines and ultimately this means betterfuel efficiency. and allowing more air into the chamber.

The need to continually meet the latest emission standards, whilst improving fuel economy is driving the growth of turbocharge market. In fact, turbocharger production is forecast to expand from 20m to 30m units by 2016, largely driven by gasoline applications adopting turbochargers to meet 2014 EURO6 emissions standard.
